About Doors

When choosing an entry door for your home you should ask about each of the following:
- What is the door material? - Materials can be wood, steel or fiberglass. Most installations today are steel or fiberglass. New England weather typically swells wood doors in the Summer months decreasing their energy efficiency and lifespan.
- What is the core made of? – Typically polyurethane is a primarily material.
- How is the frame constructed? – Is it wood that needs to be painted? Can the wood be covered with an aluminum cover?
- What is the window trim (for doors with glass windows)? Is the trim heat resistant?
- Is there a security plate and if so, what gauge? 20-gauge is typical.
- Is there a strike plate? – For added appeal.
- How is the riser constructed? – Wood, metal? Are there energy efficiency properties?
- How is the door sealed? – How is the door keeping moisture and air out of your house?
- Does the door have glass? – Are there sidelights? Is the glass beveled?
